The Engelstad Foundation was established in 2002 by Ralph and Betty Engelstad, carrying forward a belief that generosity should remain connected to the places and people that make success possible.
Long before the Foundation became what it is today, that belief shaped the way the Engelstad family understood responsibility, opportunity, and community. Las Vegas was not simply where the family built something meaningful — it became part of the family’s story.
That connection continues to guide the Foundation’s work today. We see Las Vegas as a place of depth, resilience, and possibility, while also recognizing the real gaps that exist across the region.

North Dakota Roots
Before there was a foundation, there was a partnership. Ralph and Betty Engelstad's story began in Grand Forks, North Dakota, where they met as young adults and developed the values that would guide their lives. Hard work, humility and a commitment to helping others remained constants through every chapter that followed.
Building Opportunity
Ralph's entrepreneurial journey took him from modest beginnings to some of the country's most notable business ventures. Along the way, he earned a reputation for creating opportunities for others, including hiring people with disabilities at a time when many employers overlooked them. Those decisions reflected a belief that success carries responsibility.
Las Vegas Legacy
Las Vegas became home and a place where the Engelstad family invested deeply in the community around them. Through business, philanthropy and civic involvement, they forged lasting connections across Southern Nevada. The city's growth became intertwined with the family's own story.
A Foundation Begins
In 2002, Ralph and Betty formally established the Engelstad Foundation. The initial focus centered on medical research, people with disabilities and individuals facing significant challenges. What began as a vision to continue Ralph's charitable work would soon grow into a far-reaching philanthropic organization.
Giving With Purpose
As the Foundation expanded, so did its areas of support. Investments in education, healthcare, veterans, animal welfare, historical preservation and services for at-risk individuals reflected a belief that thriving communities require support across many fronts. Every grant sought to create meaningful, lasting impact.
Next Chapter
As new generations join the Foundation’s work, we are expanding how we invest in Southern Nevada—supporting strong organizations, fostering collaboration, strengthening community infrastructure, and exploring new approaches to long-term impact. While our approach continues to evolve, our purpose remains the same: investing in the people and possibilities that make Southern Nevada stronger for generations to come.
