Our Approach

The Engelstad Foundation works across Las Vegas to understand where resources are needed and how meaningful efforts can move forward with greater alignment.

Several Ways to Engage

Engagement with the Foundation may take different forms depending on the need, relationship, and opportunity.

Grantmaking

We invest in organizations and initiatives working to improve lives and address meaningful needs across Southern Nevada.

We look for efforts that are thoughtful, well-led, and connected to long-term progress for the community.

Partnership

We work alongside nonprofits, civic leaders, institutions, and funders.
These partnerships allow us to better understand what is happening across the region, where gaps exist, and how different efforts can move together more effectively.

Connection + Convening

We help bring people, organizations, and ideas together.
This may include making introductions, creating space for shared conversation, or helping align leaders around common needs and opportunities.

Long-Term Engagement

We stay close to the work over time.
Our goal is to remain useful beyond a single moment of funding by understanding what progress looks like and where continued attention may be needed.

Before determining how to engage, we take time to understand what is needed, what is already underway, and where the Foundation can be most useful.

We also consider where gaps remain, who else is involved, and what meaningful progress could look like over time.

Over the past two years, the Foundation has been working to better understand the challenges and opportunities nonprofits across the region are experiencing. Through those conversations, we heard a continued need for resources to help build the capacity in the nonprofit space, establish cross-sector partnerships, and strengthen the ecosystem and the people they serve.

As this work continues, we expect to refine the process over time as we learn alongside our partners.

How the application process works

For open grant opportunities, organizations begin by submitting a Letter of Intent through the Foundation’s online application portal. The LOI helps us learn more about your organization, the work you are proposing, and how it aligns with the Foundation’s current priorities.

Organizations whose LOIs align with the Foundation’s strategy may be invited to submit a full application. Current opportunities, deadlines, webinar details, and application requirements will be listed on the portal during each open cycle.

All applications must be submitted in full by November 6, 2026 at 5:00pm PST to be considered for funding this year.

Step 1: Letter of Intent (LOI)

The LOI is a brief introduction to your organization and your proposed work. It helps us understand:

  • Your mission and primary activities.
  • The challenge or opportunity you are addressing.
  • The type and scale of support you are seeking.

Letters of Intent are accepted via the online portal during each application cycle, as indicated on our website. LOIs are reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the cycle. Applicants whose LOIs are selected will be invited to submit a full application, and earlier selections allow additional time to complete the full application requirements. Submitting an LOI does not guarantee an invitation to submit a full application, but every LOI is reviewed with care and in relation to the Foundation’s priorities.

Final LOI submissions will be between September 8th - September 25th, 2026

Step 2: Full Application

By Invitation Only

Organizations invited to submit a full application will receive direct instructions and guidance from the Foundation. Invited applicants may also be offered optional support such as information sessions or one-on-one conversations to help ensure proposals are clear, complete, and aligned.

A Note on Fit

Because the Engelstad Foundation focuses on strengthening systems and ecosystems, we are not able to fund every strong organization or important program. Not being invited to apply or not receiving funding does not reflect the value of your work — only the degree of alignment with our current strategy and capacity.

We encourage organizations to pursue a broad range of funding and partnership opportunities and to view the LOI as one step in an ongoing relationship with the broader philanthropic community.

What makes a strong partnership.

The strongest relationships are built with organizations and leaders who are clear about the work, honest about the challenges, and open to collaboration.

For the Foundation, strong alignment often includes thoughtful planning, steady leadership, collaborative strategies, and a clear connection to community needs.

Because not every strong organization or important program will align with the Foundation’s current priorities and capacity, we aim to bring clarity to each interaction — whether it leads to funding now, a future conversation, or another path forward.

What types of issues do you fund?

Our foundation does not solely focus on specific issue areas. Right now, we are prioritizing grants to strengthen the social sector itself — including organizational capacity, partnerships, and education that improves how systems serve communities.

General

What types of organizations do you fund?

We fund U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations at different stages of development, including both emerging and well-established organizations.

General

What is your typical grant size?

There is no standard grant size. Awards are based on the goals of the initiative, the scope of work, expected outcomes, and organizational needs.

General

Do you provide multi-year funding?

Yes. Some grants are multi-year, particularly when longer-term investment is needed to achieve meaningful systems or organizational change.

General

Do you fund general operating support or project support?

We provide both. We believe strong organizations require flexible funding, and we also support specific initiatives aligned with our strategy.

General

How often do you make funding decisions?

We accept applications through a structured process and make award decisions three times per year. Letters of Intent will be accepted from September 8th- September 25th, 2026. Selected organizations will be invited to submit a full application. The application portal will close on November 6th, 2026.

General

Do you provide feedback on declined proposals?

Our goal is to provide guidance that could support future funding opportunities, with others or potentially with ourselves. However, we are unable to schedule meetings to provide guidance forward for every grantee.

New Grant Portal Launching in 2027

To better support our nonprofit partners, the Engelstad Foundation is launching a new online grant portal in 2027.

All grant applications, reporting requirements, and Foundation communications will be managed through the portal. Organizations will be asked to create an account and complete a one-time registration process before accessing funding opportunities.

Additional information, FAQs, and registration instructions will be available prior to launch. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact our administrative team.

The new portal is designed to create a more streamlined, transparent, and connected experience for our partners.
